1. Canada – an ideal place for Immigrants

In recent years, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has released various immigration plans to fill in the labour market gaps and support the future economy. With the latest update, Canada will increase the immigrant population to 1% of Canada’s population by welcoming 431,645; 447,055 and 451,000 in 2022, 2023 and 2024, respectively.

2. Express Entry: FSWP, FSTP, CEC

Express Entry is a popular system for most immigrants. It is an online system that is used to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. There are 3 immigration programs in Express Entry:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): the program is for skilled workers who gain the foreign work experience and wish to immigrate to Canada permanently
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): skilled workers need to be qualified in a skilled trade to apply for this program
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): skilled workers who have Canadian work experience

3. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Depending on the economic growth and population, each province and territory develop its own immigration streams and requirements. Each plan targets a different group of individuals such as students, business people, skilled workers or semi-skilled workers.

Most of the programs are for those who:

  • Have the needed skills, education or work experience that can contribute to the development of the specific province or territory
  • Wish to settle down in the province
  • Want to become Permanent Residents in Canada

PNP is expected to be the most suitable option for individuals who have low Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. The permanent resident invitations issued through the PNP program in 2021 are three times higher than the number in 2020.

4. Quebec Skilled Worker (QSW)

Quebec operates its own immigration program, and QSW is monitored by the province of Quebec. The program is only open to those who have work experience and choose to contribute to Quebec’s economy.

QSW’s candidates need to go through the points ranking system, designed for the program. Then based on the immigration plan, only certain qualified candidates will be invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

5. Family Sponsorship

Canada is always open its door to family-reunification programs. There are numerous programs that allow Canadian citizens to sponsor their spouse, common-law, parents, and children. However, you can only sponsor certain relatives if you are at least 18 years old and:

  • You are a Canadian citizen
  • You are a Permanent Resident of Canada
  • You are registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

6. Indian visiting Canada to study as a visitor

Residents of India wishing to pursue studies in Canada for a period exceeding six months must obtain a study permit. Those studying in Canada for a period less than six months do not require a study permit, and can apply for a visitor’s visa alone. Study permits are typically valid for the entire term of the study program, plus an added 90 days. To apply for a study permit, an Indian student must prove to the authorities that:

  • They will leave Canada at the end of their preauthorized stay
  • They will not violate the conditions of admission, such as working without the proper authorization
  • They have the necessary funds to pay for their tuition and living expenses as well as the living expenses of any other accompanying family members
  • They also have the financial means to travel to and from Canada
  • They are considered admissible according to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

Students must also provide the authorities with a valid letter of acceptance to a Canadian academic institution in order to obtain their study permit. Moreover, Indians visiting Canada to study should apply for their permit at least two months in advance so as not to miss any registration dates due to application processing issues.

Visitors inside Canada who wish to apply for a study visa (Study permit) will have to complete a short-term course or program of study that is a prerequisite to their enrolling at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

  • Apply for an approved program for their enrolling DLI. Admission Hub offers a variety of courses that included co-op programs and not required IELTS scores.
  • Pay the fee for the study permit extension; submit your biometrics.
  • Fill out the study permit application form (Study Permit Extension IMM 5709). Attach documents: proof of acceptance into an educational institution, proof that you have enough money to support yourself while you’re studying in Canada (~$10,000 CAD for a stronger case), any police certificates that might be needed, and medical exam results (if required).
  • Receive CLOA and finish approved programs
  • Apply for Student visa

After submitting your application for a study permit online or by mail, wait until you receive confirmation from IRCC before leaving Canada if you plan to travel outside of the country during the process.
