Latest border measures to travel to Canada

The newest Canada border update introduced by Canada allows fully vaccinated travelers to enter without providing a pre-entry COVID test starting on 1st, April 2022. Before this date, travelers who want to enter the country will still need a pre-arrival antigen test.

1. Newest Canada border update for unvaccinated travelers in 2022

As of April 1, 2022, the Government of Canada is easing border measures, moving towards a sustainable approach to COVID-19. From this date, fully vaccinated travellers will no longer need to provide a pre-entry COVID test. Fully vaccinated travellers seeking to arrive in Canada before April 1, 2022, must still have a a pre-arrival antigen test.

Before February 28th, travelers needed to take a molecular test 72 hours before travel. From February 28 to March 31st, Canada allows the incoming travelers to provide an antigen test result taken within one day before their scheduled flight or arrival at the land border.

Also, travelers recovered from Covid-19 and continue to test positive can board the plane provided a positive COVID-19 molecular test on a specimen collected at least ten days and no more than 180 days before entering Canada as part of the pre-arrival test requirements.

Partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers will need to quarantine in a suitable place for 14-days and take a mandatory COVID-19 test on arrival and day 8.

2. Newest Canada Border update for fully vaccinated travelers in 2022

Fully-vaccinated travelers do not need to quarantine upon arriving in Canada, provided they meet the following criteria:

  • meet pre-entry testing requirements
  • have no symptoms
  • submit all required COVID-19 information to ArriveCAN and present their ArriveCAN receipt and pre-departure test results.
  • proof of vaccination documents before they board their flight to Canada;
  • have a suitable quarantine plan in case they don’t qualify for the exemption.

As of April 1, 2022,  fully vaccinated travellers will no longer need to provide a pre-entry COVID test

3. Canada border update regarding mandatory tests upon arrival

Border services might randomly select travelers arriving in Canada for a covid-19 test. Selected travelers can take the test at the airport or may be provided with a self-swab kit to be completed within 24 hours. After giving the test, you can travel to your residence and do not have to quarantine while waiting for the results. 

Children under 12 years of age who are not fully vaccinated, traveling with fully vaccinated or medically exempt adults, will be exempt from quarantine. They no longer need to wait 14 days before attending school, camp, or daycare.
