Express Entry candidates now have 60 days to apply

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that the deadline to submit Express Entry permanent residence (PR) applications upon receiving an ITA will be returning to 60 calendar days.

From now onwards, candidates of the Canadian Express Entry online immigration system must submit their application within 60 days after receiving an ITA. IRCC had initially implemented the longer 90-day deadline due to COVID-19. This allowed applicants more time to secure the documents needed to submit their applications. As more Canadians receive their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, immigration is slowly returning to pre-pandemic normalcy.

IRCC has rolled back this measure as of June 29. However, an official release states: “Clients who were invited to apply through Express Entry before June 29, 2021, will still have 90 days to submit their application for permanent residence.” So, those invited in the previous Express Entry draw are not affected. The new measure applies to Express Entry candidates who will be invited in the weeks to come.

What is an ITA?

ITA is an Invitation to Apply. It is a document issued by the Canadian government to Express Entry Candidates. Only candidates who meet the minimum criteria of an Express Entry draw will receive this document.

Why this is good news for Express Entry Permanent Residence applications?

The deadline update applies only to new applications.  Applicants who have already received an ITA before this update will still have the 90-day deadline to prepare their applications.

Secondly, the return to the 60-day timeframe allows IRCC to process more applications, thus speeding up the immigration process for thousands of candidates.

The Canadian government plans to welcome more immigrants.

Despite the pandemic, IRCC is still holding larger draws with low scores to achieve the goal of 1.2 million new permanent residents. According to the 2021‒2023 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada will aim to welcome 401,000 immigrants in 2021, 411,000 in 2022, and 421,000 in 2023.
