How to stay in Canada after your PGWP expires

1. Express entry to stay in Canada after your PGWP expires

Express entry is the common term for the most sought-after immigration plans in Canada, namely Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). In order to apply for express entry, you need to be eligible for any of the above programs. You also need to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from Canada’s immigration department, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), to apply for the program.

2. PNP to stay in Canada after your PGWP expires

PNP or Provincial nominee programs are managed by individual provinces in Canada to provide permanent residency to the Candidates applying. There are two types of PNP’s, namely Enhanced PNP and Base PNP. Enhanced PNP selects candidates from the Express Entry pool, thus giving them additional 600 points to their CRS score. With this, those candidates certainly receive an ITA for permanent residency. Base PNP is for those candidates who do not qualify for express entry. This can be applied from the respective provinces directly.

Foreign workers also need to follow the exact vaccine requirements mentioned above. Also, starting April 1st, there is no pre-entry testing required if you are fully vaccinated. Exempted unvaccinated travelers must provide a valid pre-entry test result. They also should update the quarantine information in case tested positive. Similar to international students, proof of vaccination must be updated in ArriveCAN before travel.

4. Quebec Immigration to stay in Canada after your PGWP expires

Quebec and the Canadian government have a special immigration arrangement. The province has its own set of criteria for selecting immigrants who will fit in well. To immigrate to Quebec, you either need a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) or Quebec Experience Program (PEQ). International students must achieve certain educational eligibility requirements, demonstrate their French language ability, and show that they want to settle in Quebec.

5. Family Sponsorship to stay in Canada after your PGWP expires

Family Sponsorship or SOWP (Spouse open work permit) can be a way to extend your stay in Canada if your spouse or common-law partner happens to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Spouses of temporary residents can also apply for this permit. Spouses of international students enrolled in eligible programs can also apply for the SOWP if they can prove their relationship is legal.
