Canada new open work permit for temporary residents
Because of Covid-19, the Canadian government has decided to implement a new open work permit for essential employees and graduates recently. The new pathway’s goal is to allow temporary residents to stay and work in the country while their application for becoming PR is processing.
If you are an international graduate student or essential worker and want to extend your stay in Canada, the new open work permit would keep you from having to leave the country while waiting for the result of any program that allows you to stay. Furthermore, it functions as a bridging open work permit; so if your spouse, common-law partner, or dependant child over the age of 18 is in Canada, they can apply for the open work permit as well. This pathway’s open work permit will be valid until December 31, 2022. Before applying for this position, you should be aware of the following important information:
Table of Contents
1. What is an open work permit?
A new open work permit operates as an open work permit for bridging without any job requirement. As a result, no LMIA or verification of a job offer from an employer via the employer portal is required.
2. How to qualify for OWP?
- have applied through the new permanent residence pathways;
- were authorized to work at the time of their application;
- hold a valid work permit that the expiration date is within the next four months;
- have temporary residence status, maintained status, or are eligible to restore their status at the time their open work permit application is submitted;
- are in Canada
- have a job in any occupation at the time they submit their PR application; and
- meet the language requirements of the stream
This new open work permit also applies to your spouse or common-law partner, as well as dependant children over the age of 18. To be qualified, they must be physically present in Canada.
Furthermore, if you sought to extend your work visa before your existing one expired, you may be allowed to keep your status. The open work permit allows you to work without authorization while maintaining the same requirements as your original permit.
3. How to apply?
There are two ways to submit the form: online or paper applications (only apply for disability or having a problem with the online application). To be specific, there are six steps you need to do as below:
Make sure you have everything you need for OWP
If you are not exempt from submitting paper forms, you must have a scanner or a camera and a credit card number to pay the expenses. You also need to ensure that you installed Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer to fill out the application forms.
Financial support to pay fees for OWP
The cost of extending a work permit is $155. As a result, before applying online, you must have the precise amount to pay.
Open an IRCC account
You will need an account online to upload the forms and monitor your application once you submit the form. Choose “Start your application” tab and then “Apply to come to Canada”, scroll down to “I do not have a personal reference code”, click on the “Visitor visa, study and/or work permit” option to begin your application with “work”.
Gather your documentation and upload your OWP form.
Before proceeding to the next stage, ensure that you have all of the essential papers for your application as well as all of the required responses regarding your information. You will also need the following documents: a copy of your fees receipt, proof that you were working legally at the time you applied (such as a work permit), proof of language test result, a copy of your passport, a digital photo, and a Family Information Form, medical exam result, and marriage certificate for accompanying family members.
Once you submit all the documents, immigration authorities will evaluate them to see if you qualify for the open work permit. Make sure that you do not skip any stages or submit incomplete forms, as the authorities may reject your application if they discover any errors. If you are qualified for an open work visa, you will receive the result via email and get your work permit at the Canadian address you provide in the form.
The new open work permit guarantees that people who have played vital roles during the epidemic may continue to provide exceptional service. The process allows students and employees to work and remain longer in Canada during the Covid-19 pandemic, so if you want to apply for an open work permit, here is your time!
