The world-class education system and affordable international education – Canada is one of the best study destinations for international students as well as Indian students. Until February 2020, Canada experienced over 620,000 international students studying at all levels in the country. Here is some basic information especially for Indian students who want to study in Canada in 2021.

Education System

In Canada, Provincial and territorial governments set up and run their own school systems. They’re much the same across Canada, but there are some differences among provinces and territories. Canada does not have a federal department or national system of education

To explain, the education system in Canada is divided into 4 main stages: pre-primary education, primary education, secondary education, and post-secondary or tertiary education.

Education is available in both English and French in most places. There are a significant amount of students in that area speaking the secondary language. High school is typical for grades nine to 12.

Besides this, students can attend either vocational schools or enter a College or a University. They will first earn a Bachelor’s degree at a university and can also continue studies to receive a Master’s or a Doctorate. Vocational students will earn certificates and diplomas that will help improve their skills.

How much does it cost to study in Canadian Colleges?

The good news for Indian students who want to study in Canada is that tuition fees are generally less expensive than in other major Anglophone destinations (the US, UK, and Australia), although they are still quite high in comparison to other countries.

Popular destinations for Indian Students:

Most of the best colleges in Canada are situated in cities such as:

How is the life of Indian students in Canada?

Same reason as most Canadians, most Indians students choose to live at larger urban centers like Toronto and Vancouver where more than 70% of Indians live. Also not to mention smaller communities are also growing in Calgary, Edmonton, and Montreal. While this may be true, Indians in Vancouver are from different parts of India. A place called Little India exists in Vancouver and a section of Gerrard Street (Toronto) in Toronto as well. Indians in Vancouver mainly live in the suburb of Surrey, or nearby Abbotsford, and also in other parts of Vancouver.

Indian students are amongst the largest group of international students who got study permits in 2019. Adding on, 139,740 Indian students were issued study permits during this period in comparison to 84,710 from China.

Due to Covid-19, a lot of Indians stuck in Canada with their visitor visa and couldn’t go back home. As a matter of the fact that Canada is one of the best study destinations, Indian students want to change their Visitor status to Study Permit so that they can continue to live and stay in Canada.

Post Study Options

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP): The PGWP allows post-graduate students who have studied at a participating Canadian university/college to gain Canadian work experience. Work experience gained through the PGWP will surely help students qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Co-Op Education Program

In a Cooperative program, a period of study alternates with work. The Student Co-op program is a formally structured program where the intent is to recruit students, while still in school, to fill permanent positions upon graduation. Co-op programs are generally undertaken at colleges and universities. Indian students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit as well as a study permit.
